Bangalore Metro a crowd-puller on New Year

Namma Metro was in huge demand on New Year’s Day as hundreds of people thronged Mahatma Gandhi Road wanting a ride on the swanky trains. It is estimated that over 16,000 people rode the Metro trains on Sunday afternoon, raking in revenue of over Rs 2.5 lakh in just a few hours between 11 pm on December 31 and 3 am on January 1.

Unlike in the past few weeks, on the first day of 2012, Metro ticket counters were packed and queues seemed to be never-ending. People thronged Mahatma Gandhi Road station waiting to take the Metro home in the early morning hours of Sunday after a heavy dose of partying. It was a pleasant surprise for Metro authorities to see so many commuters on a Sunday.

The Namma Metro is a big hit with tourists. Many outstation visitors, who were in Bengaluru to ring in the New Year, were eager to experience what it was like. “We came down to Bengaluru to celebrate New Year with our friends and how could we miss a ride on Namma Metro, the biggest attraction of the city? The ride was nice and comfortable and we hope that the city is well connected by the Metro service in the coming years,” said Rajat Jain, a student from SRM Chennai.
