Bangalore gears up for New Year

Bengaluru just had a phenomenal Christmas weekend and is now gearing up for another one on New Year’s eve. And who’s making the most of the party mood, but shopkeepers and pubs. Brigade Road – which is the most happening place, has already been decked up and since Christmas, thousands have been going there either to shop to just take a stroll.

“It has been a phenomenal Christmas, especially since November was a slow business month. On Christmas eve, all shops on Brigade Road and surrounding areas did brisk business,” said Suhail Yusuf, president, Brigade Shops and Establishments' Association. “Since Christmas eve, the business has increased and in the coming weeks, it is only going to get better,” added Yusuf. On the personal front, people are either making their plans to get out of the city over the weekend, or preparing for in-house parties. “This year, we are planning on getting out of the city for the New Year. Along with a few family friends, we will be spending the New Year in a resort away from the city,” said Deepak Mathew, an IT professional.

With the increased traffic restrictions, some city folks have planned to host parties at home. “We wanted to avoid the traffic and congestion. And especially on the New Year, the revellers flood the streets. We have invited a few friends home and will be celebrating till late,” said Venky N, a city-based musician. While many others will go pub-hopping, there are those who are planning a simple spiritual retreat. “Usually I spend the New Year’s eve in Tirupathi and start the New Year with Darshan. This year, since I won’t be going there, I plan to spend time in devotion and maybe later in the evening, I will visit a few friends for a small party,” said Tara, national and state film award winner. The festivities have already begun and no matter how they choose to do it.
