Bio- 2008 to Focus on Global Ties

Given the growing presence of India in the global biotechnology scene, the eighth edition of Bangalore Bio that starts here on April 24th will focus on the theme of global partnership.

"Partnering of Indian companies with foreign companies to develop products and new technologies will be the focus of the event," said Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, CMD of Biocon.

The event will be inaugurated by Nobel laureate professor Sidney Altman. It will be held at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) on Tumkur Road from April 24 to April 26.

This year the event has attracted around 100 international delegates and over 700 delegates from the industry, R&D, policy makers and academia. France is the international partner for the event. Merck is the global partner while Australia (Victoria State) is the country partner for the event. Over 150 exhibitors will showcase their technologies.

"For the first time, in Bangalore Bio 2008, we will give bio excellence awards to the best companies in four categories of healthcare, Agribio, Industry bio and services," said Ashok Kumar C Manoli, Karnataka IT/BT secretary.

"The State is known for its biotech innovation efforts. We are trying to accelerate the pace of growth by developing a curriculum that is on par with industry requirement standards," said Manoli.

To draw the common man to the event, there's a special focus this year on areas like detection of and intervention for cancer, diabetes and infectious diseases. There will also be sessions on investment, HRD, global opportunities and quality and safety issues.
