The BOA accorded formal approval to the proposal of Gulf Oil Corporation
Limited to set up a SEZ in the IT, IT Enabled Services (ITES), BPO
and electronic hardware in an area spread over 12 hectares near
Kattigenahalli and Venkatala villages and Yelahanka Hobli near Bangalore.
The government on Tuesday 2nd June 2009, approved eight SEZ proposals
including two in Karnataka in sectors like Information Technology
(IT) and bio-technology.These proposals were cleared by Board of
Approval (BOA) - at its meeting chaired by the Commerce Secretary
G K Pillai here.
The BOA accorded formal approval to the proposal of Gulf Oil Corporation
Limited to set up a SEZ in the IT, IT Enabled Services (ITES), BPO
and electronic hardware in an area spread over 12 hectares near
Kattigenahalli and Venkatala villages and Yelahanka Hobli near Bangalore.
The other SEZ proposal that has gone to Karnataka is - Gopalan Enterprises
India Private Limited to set up a SEZ in bio-tech sector in an area
spread over 10.95 hectares near Kundalahalli and Nallurahalli villages
K R Puram Hobli near Bangalore. The BOA also approved four more
SEZs in IT sector - three in Kerala and one in Mumbai.
Biotech projects
It also cleared two more bio-technology SEZs - one each in Andhra
Pradesh and Maharashtra.
Besides, it gave in principle approval to two multi-product and
multi-services SEZs - one each at Kotamandal in Andhra Pradesh and
Nasik in Maharashtra.
Since 2006, when SEZ Act was notified, approvals have been granted
for setting up 568 SEZs, of which 315 have been notified. Pillai
said that over Rs 1, 08,903 crore have been invested in the SEZs
so far generating employment of 3, 87,439 persons.
Total export of Rs 99,689 crore have been made from SEZs during
2008-09 registering a growth of about 50 per cent over the exports
made during 2007-08, the BOA data show.
