Diwali pumps new spirit into Metro ride

Bangalore: The sight from the Metro was delightful -- not just of imposing buildings and greenery, but the vibrant colours of crackers lighting up the sky. At 30 feet above the ground, at stations along the route, the festive spirit of Diwali greeted commuters throughout the journey.

But crackers were strictly prohibited in Metro stations. Officials on duty said people were turned back for carrying firecrackers. Like R K Singh, who was taking home a bagful for the celebrations at night. "I just wanted to take a ride, but I was turned back. I had my own doubts when I entered the station. I can come another day," said this JP Nagar resident.

It's been almost a week now but the Metro ran loaded on Day 7 too. That Wednesday was a holiday added to the swelling crowds. Up to 6pm, at least 40,000 people had taken a ride on the Metro, and the collection ran to Rs 5 lakh.

"MG Road and Brigade Road are our usual destination on holidays. And now, how can we miss the Metro ride?" asked a group of eight friends enjoying their holiday run from Byappanahalli.

Traffic police, though, are finding it difficult to manage the large crowd pouring on to MG Road from the Metro station. In spite of opening up a pedestrian crossing in front of MG Road Station, pedestrian problems continue. The common complaint is that pedestrians are not given enough time to cross over.

MA Saleem, additional commissioner of police (traffic) said steps will be taken to accommodate pedestrians. "The usual time given for the pedestrian crossing is 15 seconds. We understand there is a need for extra time and we'll look into the matter. Policemen are manning the pedestrian crossing in front of the station during the Metro's working hours," he said.

The situation should ease once the Plaza entrance is ready in December.
