With Rs 100 crore in its kitty from the Jindal Group to start Karnataka's first school of Economics, Bangalore University has drawn up a strategy to churn out some fine economists from the state.
As a first step, a core committee has been set up headed by vice-chancellor N Prabhu Dev himself, with T V Mohandas Pai as the co-chair. The committee members will include B K Bhattacharya, former chief secretary of Karnataka, Rupa Chanda, professor in Economics and Sciences at IIM-B and Parthasarathi Shome from the department of economic affairs, Union finance ministry.

"Our final report is ready, complete with rules and regulations for the appointment of a board of directors and a separate group of governors. The fee structure and proposed faculty members, along with their complete profiles, will also be part of the report. This document will be presented to the governor, who is the chancellor of universities, on November 10. Later, it will be presented before the academic council for the final nod," Prabhu Dev said.
Initially proposed to be christened the Bangalore School of Economics (on the lines of Delhi School of Economics and London School of Economics), the institute will instead be called Dr. Sitaram Jindal School of Economics of Bangalore.
"We will conduct examinations at the national level, like any other B-school and invite applications from students all over. The student intake will be restricted to 100," Bangalore University vice-chancellor N Prabhu Dev told TOI on Monday.
