Managing Director of Bangalore's front-line outdoor
advertising company Sujay House,
B S Sujay, in an interview to bangalorebest.com spoke about
the present situation of the hoarding business in Bangalore. He stressed
that the government should recognise the hoarding business as an industry.
Besides having an MBA degree, Sujay has undergone professional
training in outdoor advertising in Australia. Under his dynamic direction,
Sujay House has achieved an edge over its competitors. He says
the secret of his success lies in recruiting only the "professionals"
in that particular field.
First of all, those in the hoarding business should form their own
association to present their case before the government, he suggests.
He is also against the entry into Bangalore of the giants of hoarding
business from abroad and other states since it will be difficult for
local hoarding companies to compete with them.
Excerpts of the interview.
What is the trend in the Outdoor advertising business?
There have been peaks and dips. There was a boom recently when
numerous websites were launched in Bangalore. Now there is a temporary
decline in the business. What problems does the outdoor
advertising industry face?
Bangalore City Corporation (BCC) does not consider the hoarding
business as an industry, even though it gets large revenues from hoardings
in the city. At present, we have problems with the BCC only.
When was Sujay House established?
Sujay House (hoardings company) was established 32 years ago by
my father, B P Suresh Kumar. What are the different
types of hoardings?
The types in hoardings are: Painted hoardings, vinyl and tri-ads.
We are the first to introduce the tri-ads in Bangalore. Tri-ad is
a different kind of hoarding with the latest technology. It shows
three different messages simultaneously. It is also called hybrid
hoarding. Who are your major clients?
Our clients' list is very long. Coke, Airtel, Raymonds, Maruti,
TVS, HDFC, ICICI, Zeenext.com, Rediff.com, Reid and Taylor and Hongkong
Bank to mention a few.
In Bangalore, which are the hoarding-free places?
On Airport Road, the State Government has prohibited erection
of hoardings. Within one kilometre radius of Vidhana Soudha also
hoardings are not allowed by the State Government.
What about competition from other kinds of media like Television
and newspapers?
I do not believe that the other media like Television and newspapers
are competitors to us. Each media has its own impact. To reach more
number of people, clients should give their ad to all kinds of media
- TV, radio, newspapers. But hoardings are cheaper than newspaper
advertisement rates.
