Ten car commandments

Wiith life becoming more mechanical and fast paced, car owners to have little or no time to really care for their car. It is essential for car owners to keep a 'mechanical eye' on their prized possession.

  • Check the oil, brake fluid, coolant, windshield washer fluid, power steering fluid (if you have power steering), hydraulic clutch fluid level (if applicable), and the automatic transmission fluid level (if applicable).

  • Make sure the dash lights, headlights, brake lights, back-up lights and turn signals are in good working order.

  • Check the tyre pressure in all four tyres and the spare tyre.

  • Review the condition of the tyres: look for uneven wear and check the tread depth.

  • Look in the engine compartment and under the car for wetness that may indicate a leak.

  • Examine all the belts for cracks. Be sure to check the inside of the belts.
  • Inspect all the hoses: look for cracks, leaks, or hoses that are rubbing and may develop a leak.

  • Inspect the battery for corrosion at the cable ends.

  • If minor problems exist and can be tackled, go about it. But never touch the problem if its nature is unclear.
    ·
  • Make sure that child-lock and other security systems are intact.
  • It's up to car owners to check (once every month) the foresaid little things before they become big and expensive problems.
