Calligraphy is the art of producing beautiful or elegant
handwriting. The
term Calligraphy is derived from its Greek roots: kalli
meaning beautiful and graphia referring to writing.
Although most often associated with the beautiful writing
done by scribes during the Renaissance, it has come to encompass
beautiful lettering made by many means. Oriental brush lettering
or Roman stone carving are equally a part of what we call
Calligraphy today.
Even as the art is declining, true calligraphers will always
keep it alive as long as they are willing to carry on the
tradition. Despite super fast computers that can produce a
number of different fonts, real calligraphy comes from deep
within the artist who strives to evoke the true emotion of
the script through the words they draw.
M .L
Bharath who launched his career as a full-fledged calligraphist
after he lost interest in his previous job has obtained his
Diploma in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering.
"It was the job satisfaction I was looking for and later
I realised that my talent could fetch me both the satisfaction
as well as money" says, Bharath.
"Scripts" - the school of Calligraphy established
by Bharath carries a vision to help people improve their handwriting
and explore the old art. He has conducted several workshops
on Handwriting improvement and Calligraphy in Mysore, Bangalore
and Hyderabad. The workshops usually held for 15 days impart
basic skill, continuity skills, perfect letter forms, spacing
concepts, different strokes and styles of lettering namely
Roman, Italics and Gothic. He enrolls around 20 to 25
students for each class as he feels that only then he can
concentrate individually on each student.
Other than children, Bharath has many adults also as his
students, who pick up skills very fast, which makes him feel
proud.
Out
of these several workshops he recalls SOS Children's Village, where he conducted a workshop
having around 200 children of the organisation, as the memorable
one.
He is the son of Mr M.L.N Swamy, a retired Bank Manager of
the State Bank of Mysore who has also attained proficiency
in this field. His works have been appreciated by President
Dr. S. Radhakrishnan and Her Majesty Elizabeth II,
Queen of England and has won him medals and prizes from several
prestigious institutions. He also possesses more than 150
rare varieties of penholder nibs, ink pens and penholders.
Bharath is a member of Association for the Calligraphic
Arts (ACA), USA.
