Doggy business, with dedication

Pataliah with KhushbooWhen it comes to loyalty, nothing can replace a dog. And this intimate relationship between dog and man is a source of capital for T Pataliah, the city-based dog breeder-cum-trainer, who has been cashing in on it for more than two decades!

Having turned his house, located in Devara jeevana halli in Bangalore, into a dog breeding centre called Udaya Kennel, Pataliah and wife Jayamma, with the help of their three sons, have been catering to customers with a penchant for different canine breeds. Udaya Kennel wears the look of a circus company, with a number of 'dog-houses' spread out on the large yard in front of the house. As we enter the compound, we see many different breeds of dogs like Dash-hound, Doberman, Mudhol hound, German Shepherd, Alsatian and others, both full grown animals and puppies.

Dicky , a Great Dane, which he bought on installments on his wife Jayamma's insistence, was the animal that got them into the business. When Dicky conceived eleven puppies at one go, the duo sold some of the puppies and, at the same time, decided to carry on the business in a sensible way. Then came a German Shepherd Khushboo, which went on an award-winning spree at all the dog shows that it participated in. Khushboo won the All India Kennel Competition held in 1997, followed by the State level championships thrice. Pataliah is grateful to both Dicky and Khushboo for having put him and his family in the limelight, besides making them financially stable.

SPataliah and sons with the awardspeaking about the competition, Pataliah says, "There are risks in this business as well." Nonetheless, a smile of pride lurks under his thick mustache when he recalls the number of prizes his animals have brought him in competitions. Different breeds have specific food allotment and medications. And now, his sons Udaya Shankar and Dharmapaliah are taking care of the business. Dharmapaliah revealed that Udaya Kennel has already dealt with around thirty different breeds of dogs. Their clientele comprise people from different walks of life, from VIPs of the police and government departments, advocates and entrepreneurs of private corporate houses, to the common public.
