"Bring up dogs like children" -T Pataliah, Dog breeder and trainer.
T hough
he sports a thick mustache, T Pataliah is not a man from the
battalion. But he is strict, strict in sticking to his principles
of business in the breeding and training of dogs. He never allows
his dogs to conceive more than once a year, as he wants them all in
good health. He is careful to see that he showers only love and encouragement
while training his dogs.
How did you get into this business of breeding?
Since childhood, animals have fascinated me. I used to breed cats,
dogs, parrots, pigeons rabbits and mongoose and sell them. But it
was difficult to make it big since my parents objected. Then I got
a job at the government Stores and Purchase department in Bangalore.
My wife Jayamma, who shared my keen interest in animals, encouraged
me to bring up dogs. Our first dog was Dicky, a Great Dane. When
we sold some her puppies, we thought of continuing in the business.
Can you brief us about your method of operation?
We have many Indian breeds that meet the needs and taste of the general
public. But, there are some customers who come in asking for foreign
breeds. We cater to that requirement within a week, for they need
to be imported. Our son Dharmapaliah trains the dogs according to
the customer's requirement. We impart two types of training, on 'obedience'
and on 'smelling'.
How does it feel when you have to sell a dog that you have brought
up with utmost care?
I never keep myself attached to them to the exte nt
that it hurts me while parting with them. Besides, I do not sell the
ones that I love most. I've turned down offers worth lakhs of rupees
for many of my dogs that have won awards at kennel shows.
Have your dogs participated in movies?
Yes. They've acted in many Kannada films like Hi-command, Agnisaakshi,
No 1 and others. When I went with six of my dogs to the sets of Agnisakshi
on Director Shivamani's request, people there had a hard time getting
the animals to do what was required for the shoot. When I helped them
control the dogs, they asked me to don the role of a police inspector
in the film.
Who are your clients?
Deputy Inspector General Vimal Mehra, Vajrakumar (a well-known person
in Dharmasthala), a doctor from Wock-hardt, an executive in Jagadale
group, an editor and a host of others have been our customers. There
is a large customer base in Chickmagalur, Hassan, Mangalore and even
out side Karnataka in places like Bombay, Calcutta and northern India.
We have often sent dogs via air on customer's request.
What is your ideology on bringing up and training a dog?
We all know that love begets love. They all should be looked after
like children. They only ask for love and return it with their loyalty.
We should never threaten dogs while training them. They should always
be encouraged for every action during training. Pataliah dreams big.
His dream is to establish a much bigger farm house where he can breed
animals of different types. That's good news for animal lovers.
