Libraries
are repositories of knowledge, information and entertainment.
The traditional concept of a library as a place to access papers,
records, books is being redefined to one that also houses the
most advanced media.
The Eloor Lending Library started in 1988. Having
three branches in Kerala, one in Kolkata, one in Chennai and
another one coming up soon in New Delhi, Eloor has come a long
way. Eloor Library in Bangalore is quite a large one having
about 70,000 books. One can get fiction and non-fiction,
computer books and reference material on any subject ranging
from world history, culture, literature, architecture, archaeology,
decoration, comics, children magazines from various parts
of the world and a whole range of other books, all under one
roof.
"Books
are my balloons! They lift me out of one world into another!
and that is why I am here," says Gopal the manager of
the library. Eloor is by far the best lending library in Bangalore.
The Internet is fast catching up in India and there is a
common belief that books would soon be redundant as a whole
lot information is just a click away. But ask a book lover
and he would just wave away the thought. No medium can ever
wipe out print media. "Browsing through the Net for information
and reading a book is a totally different experience,"
opines the manager.
There
are 12,000 members. People from different age groups
and profession come here. So on one hand you can find a four-year-old
going through his favourite comics on the other you can bump
on serious looking professor looking up for reference material
for his lecture.
The annual membership fee is Rs 500 and this is refundable.
When you borrow a book you have to pay 10% of the cost
of the book. You can keep a book for two weeks.
If you are a fervent reader who would like to explore horizons
of knowledge, don't forget to drop in at Eloor Lending
Library.
