The Mobile Library

Are you too busy to go to the library? Now here is a library that comes to you. Bangalore City Library Authority started the Devraj Urs Mobile Library on April 4, 1994. They have a total number of twenty vans which go to different locations in the city.

The Mobile Library is available to the public on all the working days of the week. At present the library has 2830 members. Though there is no membership fee, there is a minimal deposit money charged for the books at a rate of Rs 25, 30 and 40 depending on the book you borrow. This deposit is refundable. Each van has about 38729 books and a few audiovisual cassettes. The audiovisual educational cassettes are shown to the public only on Sundays. These libraries are manned by one librarian and one assistant.

The Mobile Library starts from the Cubbon Park Central Library every morning. R V Maranabasari, chief librarian at the head office says, "The public response is good. The main aim of this library is to provide the public easy accessibility to books."

These mobile library vans visit twenty places in a day. Each library van has to cover at least four locations in a day. Per day around 450 to 500 people visit the Mobile Library.

The library's collection comprise both earlier editions and the latest books. Every member can borrow three books at a time. In the event of loss of a book by a member, the library authority sends three reminders. After three reminders, if the book or the cost of the book is not deposited then the member's name is sent to the police.
