Karnataka State
Khadi and Village Industries Board
Industrialise
or perish -This is the wake up call of KSKVIB to rural industries.
The architect of modern Karnataka, Sir M Visweswaraya
chanted the "Industrialise or perish"manthra
decades ago. The Karnataka State Khadi and Village Industries
Board located near Cantonment railway station in Bangalore
is implementing it, but it has also adopted Mahatma Gandhi's
dream of uplifting villages in the industrial sector.
Karnataka State Khadi and Village Industries Board (KSKVIB)
has been successfully operating since 1957 and is playing
a vital role in developing various industries, Khadi weaving
being a major one.
With the financial assistance from the central and state governments,
the board has organised various developmental programmes for
village industries. These include industries that process cotton,
wool, silk and castor.
KSKVIB had taken up the VISHWA project. This project,
the brainchild of the state government, was implemented during
1991-92. Till 1997, KSKVIB has trained as many as 7671 villagers
under various industries. Such training has empowered the
villagers to get into jobs in industries run under the financial
assistance of KSKVIB. The association sells the products of
its industries door-to-door via two mobile vans in 16 locations
of Bangalore.
Organisations that have taken financial assistance from KSKVIB
are made to participate in the famous Dussera exhibition
held in Mysore every year, which showcases products of
various industries. To get national and international attention,
the products were exhibited at Delhi's Pragathi Maidaan in
November 1999.
KSKVIB also encouraged the organisations to participate in the
International exhibition held in Mauritius in
1999. This enabled them to get an international platform to
showcase their products.
Initiatives to improve product packaging: In order to
improve the packaging of the products to meet modern standards,
KSKVIB organised a workshop on its premises on March 20, 2000.
The Chief Secretary of Commerce and Industries Department inaugurated
the workshop which was arranged to improve the packaging of
the products. People who are directly involved in the production
of KSKVIB products were exposed to additional skills and newer
technologies. Consumers, scientists and experts also participated
in the workshop.
Plans
for the coming year 2000-2001.
The association plans to provide loans to those who want
to establish industries in rural areas.
To hone up the entrepreneurial skills of persons planning
to establish village industries.
To organise 'Khadi Fashion Shows' in order to
promote khadi sales.
To hold exhibition-cum-sale of the KSKVIB products.
To establish 'Market links' in the premises of
its central office to bring consumers and the producers
closer.
To uplift the existing 380 outlets spread across
the state as per the modern requirements. By modernising
and computerising them, it intends to attract consumers.
By contributing to the up-liftment of rural industrial development,
KSKVIB is rendering silent and sincere services in the field.
It has small and medium scale industries under its umbrella,
which has increased employment in villages.
