The proprietor of Saboo Collections, Arun Saboo let
our team in on interesting aspects of their family business.
When was Saboo Collections established and who was the founder?
In 1994. Our shop was inaugurated by Sreeji Baba of Mathura.
Where do you get the silk from?
We have our own weaving unit in Bangalore and we have weavers
all over India who supply silk saris on contract basis.
Is this the only outlet in Bangalore or do you have branches
in other states?
We have two retail outlets, one in Bangalore and another in
Delhi. Our whole sale outlets are in Bangalore, Delhi, Bombay
and Calcutta.
Which
of your saris is the most popular?
The most popular varieties of silk saris are Banarasi, Crepe
silks, Crepe embroideries and Kanjivaram silk saris. For casual
wear some buy printed silks.
What type of garments do young lady customers look for?
Swaroski fancy saris are the latest craze among young ladies
for its glittering crystals. Swaroski crystals are glued to
the sari in beautiful designs which glitters beautifully. Even
on several washes the swaroski crystals do not fall off from
the sari. Young ladies also go in for fancy salwar suits which
are more popular than saris these days.
What does Saboo Collections specialise in?
We mainly stock party wear and wedding saris and garments in
silks and other varieties.
Which is the most expensive sari you have for sale?
The most expensive sari we have is of the Kanjivaram type. The
sari has a rich pallu and border. It is available in different
colours. [He was reluctant to reveal the price but hinted that
it cost tens of thousands of rupees].
Who
are your celebrity customers?
Celebrities like Vishnuvardhan, Shivarajkumar, Tabu, Anuradha
Podwal, Usha Utthap, Mohan Babu, Anil Kumble and some ministers
and other celebrities are our customers.
How can a customer judge the quality of silk fabric?
The best way to test the purity of a silk sari is to pull out
a strand of silk thread from the fabric and burn it. If the
string changes into ash it is pure silk. But if the string melts
like plastic, it is not pure silk. (Arun Saboo demonstrated
this at his shop for bangalorebest.com)
How can one prevent the sari's zari from becoming black?
Pure zari is made of genuine gold and silver thread and would
not turn black, though slight variation in its shade may set
in after some years. But nowadays, silk outlets help customers
polish the saris to bring the shine back to the zari border.
What type of sari border designs are popular these days?
It is difficult to say which designs are popular. Now it is
a mixture of traditional designs (like peacock, mango) and fancy,
new designs. Unlike earlier times, now there are more than 2000
colours and shades available in silks.
What
is the trend in the silk industry?
Now it is on the upswing due to the festival and marriage season.
Which are the potential silk weaving areas in Bangalore?
In most places in Bangalore, silks is woven on both handlooms
and power-looms. Cubbonpet, Sampangiramnagar, Srirampuram, Yelahanka
are a few places where silk weaving is done.
