Soon
we will be able to control all our household appliances with
our cell phones.
This is being made possible by Bluetooth technology, the latest
happening in the world connectivity scene in general and wireless
connectivity in particular. Bluetooth technology is based on
the short-range radio link that connects all the electrical/electronic
devices that are linked with a Bluetooth chip, which performs
the role of a remote controller. The very idea of these connections
is to eliminate the cumbersome cables that were connecting only
a limited numbered devices.
Bluetooth technology was conceived in 1998 when the leaders
in mobile telephones, laptop computing & signal processing technologies
viz., Ericsson, Nokia, IBM, Toshiba and Intel grouped to form
Special Interest Group (SIG).
The latest developments by the SIG group are enabling electrically
powered, electronically driven devices to get connected like
never before. A tiny Bluetooth microchip, incorporating a radio
transceiver built in those devices, connects all the contacts
instantly facilitating both voice and data transmission. Devices
within 10 meters of range which are housed even in different
rooms (immaterial of noise and light) can be connected with
a globally compatible radio frequency band. This flexible nature
has given rise to many applications, some we would not even
have dreamt of.More freedom, more mobility, more fun!
Imagine a riot breaking out in the town when children
are at school. Meanwhile, when you are worried about them, you
get a message that they are back home, safe. With a Bluetooth
enabled mobile phone you can even control the locking of your
car. When the same handset informs you that the meal is ready
in the microwave, you need be surprised! All this will be possible
with Bluetooth with its low cost radio-based links.
With other initiatives like Wireless Application Protocol [WAP]
and Symbian, Bluetooth is going to be a key technology that
can blur the boundaries between offices and houses. With Bluetooth
designing a speedy and secured transmission of data, no company
wants to lag behind in connecting to this. Consequently, software
developing houses, network vendors, peripheral, camera, and
consumer electronic gadget manufacturers, companies that offer
mobile hand held devices like cell phones and palmtops are all
joining the bandwagon of Bluetooth promoters.
With more than 1300 players from all parts of world in the Bluetooth
family, this technology is emerging as the fastest growing industry.
Along with new entrants, the year 2002 is expected to see most
of the cables and cords vanish, conceptualizing the mobile information
society.
