CDAC takes Indian languages to the World Wide Web

All these days you have been e-mailing with the universally accepted EnglishCDAC uses GIST language. With many areas needing to be customized, the web also has become one. A 'multi-lingual literate' wants to use languages of his interest and choice. What should they do then? Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) provide answers with its wide range of softwares, by which a person can transact e-mail/discuss and do almost everything (in generating text) using the language of their choice.

CDAC, formed in 1987, are pioneers in developing multi-lingual softwares for thirteen Indian languages. Their products like Leap Office, Shaili, the latest ISM 2000 and others are eliminating the language barrier. These softwares provide solutions for various applications like data processing, multimedia, Video-works on a wide range of platforms such as Internet, Windows, UNIX, MAC, DOS and custom built hardware.

Earlier they had developed many types of software like Apex Language Processor, Gist Shell, Gist Card and Gist Terminal that supported DOS. With the decline in demand, they started coming out with different products to serve the publishing, Internet and the entertainment industry.

At CDAC, the emphasis is on the ability to move with the times (depending onCDAC popularises regional languages in computers the application). One of the technical officers in their Bangalore office says, "Our product LEAP Office is developed to enable Indian languages for office applications and has features like multilingual spell checker, dictionaries, online keyboard and features that make the use of Indian languages extremely easy. This software is equipped with an editor, wherein the user could create his own page. This page could be converted for web-based requirements with the application of CDAC's Converter (an executable file), which is supplied on request."

But now LEAP Office has been up graded to serve different applications likeWide range of CDAC Products online communication, e-commerce, and publishing for websites under the name ISM 2000 (ISFOC Script Manager 2000). By incorporating ISM Office, ISM Publisher and ISM Soft with GIST technology (Graphical and Intelligence based Script Technology), these have come in handy for a variety of applications.

ISM 2000 assists in:

  • Documentation of annual reports, telephone directories and hand books.

  • Communication through e-mail.

  • Multimedia CDs in Indian languages.

  • Word processing and data processing in Indian languages.

  • Software development to automate official process

  • Conventional and web Publishing.
  • ISM 2000 also supports the flexibility of configuring one's own keyboard layout. Added to this, it provides interactivity of the floating keyboard layout, which allows use of the mouse to enter data. Other features include conversion of figures to words, font/clipart previewers, date and time formatting.

    They are also looking at different segments for TV, the publishing and video industry applications with packages like MOVE CG 2001, Chameleon CD Creator and multilingual subtitling services. MOVE CG 2001 is a total solution for creating multilingual characters consisting of a high-speed processor-based system. Chameleon CD Creator provides solutions for creating Video CD, CD-I, CD-ROM and Photo CDs. It can record and preview digitally compressed video/audio in real time.

    With many clients in the entertainment industry, ranging from TV Channels (including Prasar Bharati) to other corporate clients and publishing houses in India and abroad, CDAC is focusing its efforts on enabling Indian languages to meet the needs of the digital world.

    Having a dedicated R & D team, CDAC is moving with the technology to cater to the futuristic needs of the industry. Their indigenous Super Computer PARAM 10000 is been widely marketed all across the globe. With their innovative indigenous technological expertise, they are working on many new areas like WAP, Optical Character Recognition, voice to text, text to voice and others. It is also having Advanced Computation Training Schools (ACTS) all over India aimed to impart training to candidates to become professionally competent in the IT industry.
