"India
is a strong commitment for Cisco and the expansion of our Global

Vice President and General Manager, Enterprise Line of Business,
Cisco Systems, in their press conference recently. World leader
in Internet networking, Cisco Systems Inc. announced
its investment plans in India. The Company plans to expand its
business in India by investing 150 million dollars over the
next two years.
Jayashree Ullal, Vice President and General Manager,
Enterprise Line of Business, Cisco Systems, said that GDC in
Bangalore is the largest R&D facility outside the USA and intends
to develop technologies in order to provide solutions and products
for the customers in the Internet business. Mr Gary Jackson,
Vice President, Asia Operations, added that the investment plans
are the result of the scope that Cisco has seen in the phenomenal
growth of Internet and Telecommunication market in India.
On
August 17, 2000, Chief Minister of Karnataka,S
M Krishna, inaugurated the company's brand new facility
for their Global Development Centre (GDC). Cisco Systems,
Inc. started its own research and development activities in
India in May 1999 with its world class Global Development Centre
(GDC) in Bangalore. The GDC is located in a brand new facility
at the Prestige Waterford building on Brunton Road, Bangalore.
The GDC is part of Cisco's strategic initiative to expand its
Research and Development Centres globally and in India, in particular.
The excellent talent pool available in India combined with proactive
Government policies have made it easier for multinationals to
set up operations in India. The Cisco GDC, staffed by some of
the best talent available in the industry, conducts research
and develops software and hardware used in Cisco products distributed
worldwide.
The state-of-the-art GDC facilities have been set up with the
same level of networking/systems infrastructure and investments
that are available at any Cisco R&D facility in the United States.
The GDC is linked to Cisco's lab in its San Jose headquarters
through a multi-megabit fibre optics link which provides high-speed
connectivity to the workstations and systems. An additional
4 Mbps fibre optic link is under test. The Data Centres at the
GDC are equipped with Sun Enterprise 6500 class servers, HP
NT servers and various other systems. GDC's self-contained test
and development system labs enable engineers to perform a complete
development cycle before a product or a feature is integrated
with the mainline product.
The
entire network infrastructure is built using Cisco's own routers
and switching devices implementing an India-wide Cisco Wide
Area Network (WAN). Cisco's development partners like HCL, Wipro
and lnfosys manage these development centers. They have engineers
in Chennai and Bangalore committed full-time to Cisco projects.
Apart from Bangalore, Cisco Systems India Private Limited has
employed about 500 employees across India in other cities like
Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Calcutta.
