What makes an employee say, "Working at Infosys is an experience,
something which is difficult to put into words"? It is
the ethical values he imbibes here, along with the necessary
skills required for his work at Infosys. The CEO of the company,
N R Narayana Murthy, believes in and implements leadership
by example. Besides being the most admired company, Infosys
has added yet another feather to its cap. It has been named
India's Best Employer by the Business Today-Hewitt
Survey.
If it is just not the huge package the employees get as pay,
what else can make them proud to be associated with the company?
Probably this question has many answers in waiting. The stock
option, the food and above all, the open atmosphere where individuals
can work. Here every employee is considered as a key asset.
The management communicates and shares information with them
regularly. There is no hierarchy and everyone is treated and
behaves like equals, be it in the lunch queue or taking part
actively in all employee events. The management follows an open-door
policy that builds a personal rapport with the employees.
None wants to be left out: Infosys has become a dream company
as
everyone seems to want to work for: It received 1,83,966 applications
in 1999; and till December 1, 2000, it had received 2,59,820.
In just six months (between April and September 2000), Infosys
recruited 2,991 candidates. In total, the company has 7,925
employees and 4,616 employees in the Bangalore campus itself.
The company has managed to offer stock options to 7,853 of its
employees (as on September 30, 2000), creating 1,773 rupee millionaires
and 213 dollar millionaires.
Infosys has a vigorous recruitment agenda that includes interviews
with the HR
manager, potential supervisor, supervisor's manager and potential
peers. And the key areas of consideration while recruiting are
the degree of learnability and the candidates' compatibility
to fit with the organizational culture and values. At this company,
the emphasis is on the continuous up gradation of skills. It
is evident in the company's investment of 2.65 percent of turnover
for education and research. Every Infoscion receives an average
47 hours of training, besides regular 'value workshops'
meant for reinforcing articulated values. The company's Managing
Director, Nandan Nilekani, states a list of things that
go into the making of a great organization, things like strategy,
work practices, culture, organizational structure, infrastructure,
ambience, facilities, pay and options.
Facilities: Spread across a 50-acre campus, Infosys has
five office blocks,
three canteens, a 5,000 square feet large gymnasium and a swimming
pool, a three-storeyed training centre (a chrome and glass structure
built at a cost of Rs 23.6 crores), a parqueted aerobics room,
the largest video-wall in the whole of Asia and a full-fledged
medical centre. Three canteens cater to every taste bud with
Dominos outlet, a Coffee Day bar and kathi-roll joint.
The growth of Infosys has been phenomenal. Their sales have
increased by 111.75 per cent with a net profit of 122.30 per
cent in the first half of 2000-01. The company is also into
social service. Every year, one per cent of its profits are
donated to the Infosys Foundation, of which Sudha Murthy,
is the Chairman. Even the employees are encouraged to contribute
to different funds.
And what does the modest Chairman have to say about his success
and that of the company? "There needs to be successful models
of such community behaviour. I have no pretensions. We have
started this marathon. We have a long way to go." Despite
being a global giant, Infosys manages to retain the spirit and
warmth of a small, software shop.
