Plain
glass is out, stained glass is a la mode. And how! Corporate
houses, star hotels and big time retail outlets are all going
in for the stained glass look in show rooms and work places.
Stained glass, a beautiful art, is the method of cutting glass
and crafting the cut-glass pieces into the required form or
design. Glasscrafters on Cambridge Road has exquisite
stained glass to suit the requirement of both individuals and
corporates.
According
to Asad Hajeebhoy, the proprietor of Glasscrafters,
both imported and Indian glass is used for his stained glass
craft. "First, a design of the customer's choice is decided.
Then, according to the design, the stained glass is coloured
with metal oxide. (Different oxides are used to get different
hues. Cobalt for blue, iron oxide for a green colour, gold oxide
gives red and antimony oxide for yellow.) Before incorporating
the cut-glass pieces into the required design, the edges of
each piece of glass is smoothened and covered with a copper
foil. Then all the cut glasses are incorporated into the required
design or object form."
Imagination is all you need to adorn homes, offices, hotels
or religious spaces. Glasscrafters will bring it into
reality with its innovative craft. Asad accepts orders
for trophies, mementos. Letters and company logos will be sandblasted
or etched.
Several
big companies like Wipro are Glasscrafters' clients. Asad has
been into this craft for the past 22 years. He has his own workshop
and assistants to produce stained glass artefacts. Even window
panels, skylights, domes of churches or buildings can be adorned
with stained glass works, Asad explains. Stained glass ornaments,
and other showcase pieces like Ganesha pendants are available
in beautiful designs and colours at Glasscrafters. The cost
of the artefacts at Glasscrafters range from a mere Rs 70 to
Rs 10,000. "Stained glass jewellery is becoming popular with
ladies nowadays," Asad says while pointing at some of these
beautiful pieces. He also accepts individual orders for ornaments.
Asad
learnt this craft from Vinayak of Mumbai. Both Vinayak
and Asad have handled prestigious stained glass projects
in Mumbai, the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Asad's experience
has added an international dimension to their company Glasscrafters.
Orders can be placed with Glasscrafters for window panels,
arches, skylights, domes, screens and partitions, bevel clusters,
gift items, tiffany lampshades.
