The Indian Institute of Architects (IIA)

IIA is a prime official body which has served the field of Architecture for the past 82 years. With its Head office in Mumbai, the institute has a network of 16 chapters and 35 centres with a membership of more than 13000 architects throughout India. The IIA organises various seminars on architecture, talks, events, conventions, slide shows and exhibitions on the national as well as at the state level, and is associated with all international architectural associations.
The Institute plays a major role in promoting the profession of architecture in India. It organises programmes such as ‘Outreach’ which are conducted through its chapters and centres which communicate with the public in various regional languages by using the press and electronic media. Public lectures are also arranged on commemorative days such as World Environment Day, World Habitat Day, etc. The institute has taken a bold stride forward in this age of information and technology. It has launched its website, www.iia-india.org. The website will give global coverage to the institute, and also present the architechtural scenario and the building industry in India. The site features information about IIA, its aims, objectives, networks, activities, competitions, chapters and centres, and will also provide analyses about the trends in the architectural field.

The Institute has a library established by endowment. The Sohrab Bharucha Architectural Library is located at the institute's headquarters in Mumbai. It is open to all members and to students of architecture. The Institute is planning to establish an independent publishing body to be called IIA Publications Ltd. Plans to open a professional legal cell in collaboration with the Council of Architecture and to set up a Heritage Cell are also in the wings. The institute has acquired its own property in the C.B.D. Area at Belapur, Navi Mumbai.
