"Looking at
the sky and feeling high". That was the proud feeling of every
astronomy enthusiast who visited 'Science in Action : Astronomy'
exhibition held in the city recently. The exhibition was
organized at the
Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium by the Bangalore Association
of Science Education (BASE).
Seventy students from three different schools volunteered in
explaining twenty-seven models to the visitors who comprised
students and other people. City's Webster's School and BBUL
Jain Vidyalaya were among the schools that displayed the astronomy-related
models.
Some of the practical demonstrations that covered a wide array
of astronomical topics were, flattening of planets by rotation;
visibility of Saturns rings; the third month of the Earth; Doppler's
effect; rotation of Venus; principle of photometer; Gre enouse
effect; rotation of the Earth and the pole star; rotation and
revolution of the moon; phases of the moon; retrograde motion
and principle of blinking.
Speaking to bangalorebest.com, planetarium's educator
Shylaja B S said," This astronomy-related exhibition
is a part of our bi-monthly exhibitions under Science
in Action series. Two months ago we had an
exhibition that covered
chemistry-related topics.
Forthcoming events would be educating students and science enthusiasts
about mathematics and physics." The three-day event held
from September 8-10, 2000, saw over 2000 visitors, mostly students,
visiting the exhibition each day.
