The Indian Institute of Ayurvedic Medicine and Research
It's
a new dawn for Ayurveda, the Indian traditional medicine. The
Indian Institute of Ayurvedic Medicine and Research situated
in
R T Nagar, was set up in 1997. It is a charitable trust approved
by the government of Karnataka and affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi
Institute of Health Sciences.
The founder of this institute is Mr. L K Raju. Ramakrishna Hegde,
former Union Minister of Finance, is the Chairman of
this institute.
L K Raju, the founder, says, " When I was a child I used
to take only home made medicines which have curative properties.
I slowly developed interest in ayurveda and then decided to
revive this 4000-year-old traditional medicine. This institute
is set up to save and revive ayurveda.
"We concentrate mainly on research in ayurveda. Our institute
has collected ayurvedic data from all over India. Invaluable
ayurvedic scripts written on palm leaves have also been collected
by us," adds L K Raju.

The institute offers bachelor degree course in Ayurvedic Medicine
and Surgery (BAMS). The course begins in November. The students
must have scored at least 50% marks in their qualifying examination.
The total intake is limited to fifty. There is no reservation
of seat. This course includes three semesters. Every semester
is of one and half year's duration. The students have to undergo
one year of internship in any ayurvedic hospital.
THE CURRICULUM
The first semester includes the following subjects: Sharira
Rachana, Sharira Kriya, Padhartha Vignanam, Ayurvedic Ithihas,
Asthanga Sanghra and Sanskrit as a basic subject.
The second semester includes the following subjects: Roga vignanam,
Agadha Tantra, Dravya Guna and Rasa Sashthra.
The third semester includes the following subjects: Shalya Tantra,
Shalakaya Tantra, Prasuti Tantra and Stri Tantra, Kaumara Bhritya
and Kaya Chikitsa.
FACILITIES
The institute has a steam chamber, lab facilities, a x-ray unit,
an operation theatre and a well stocked library.
Dr Arun Pillai, a faculty member, says, " There are various
options for the students after completing the course. They can
join central and state government services or set up their own
ayurvedic clinic."
COURSE FEE
The course fee is Rs 22,000 annually. For students outside Karnataka
the fee is Rs 25,000.
SEMINARS
The students of this college actively participate in various
national and international seminars on ayurveda. They conduct
rural health camps and child health care programmes at various
villages of Karnataka.
The institute also has a research centre where various types
of ayurvedic medicines are prepared under the supervision of
experts.
"The number of students applying for our Ayurvedic course
has been increasing every year. We have treated many chronic
cases such as coronary heart problems, diabetes, skin disorders,
allergies, psoriasis, gangrene, sinus and the like," says
the principal Dr. Muralidhara.
The institute has the following departments: Surgery, ENT, Diabetes,
Pediatrics, Laboratory and Toxicology.
They also provide snakebite treatment and well known leech treatment.
