CHOOSING THE RIGHT CAREER

Every year by this time we see lakhs of students eagerly waiting for the results of Common Entrance Test for their entry either for MBBS or Engineering. After tough preparations for the examination they take time to decide which career they should pursue in their life, though most of them opt for Engineering. About 3.5 lakh students were granted admissions in engineering colleges in India in 2003. Recent estimate show that about 70,000 engineers are unemployed.

Students often get confused as to which branch to choose, which college and so on. Lack of proper communication and information are the main obstacles in decision making. Rapid changes in programmes, costs and government rules, which affect college requirements and resources, complicate students' plans. To make it easy for the students, most of the colleges have websites and information centres, which give details on the course structure, faculty, infrastructure and other details. Roughly around 50,000 students enrol in the best engineering colleges. The real problem arises from the state level or private college where a maximum of 80% of the students go. Drop out rates and failure rates in engineering are high with some institutes stipulating a cut off percentage for students to even participate in the campus placement process.

Deciding the best college

College reputation: Take time to find out which companies recruit from the college you are going to apply. Flash advertisements and brochures promising world class infrastructure and blue chip placements cannot be considered as a good reputation for the college. Find out whether the college offers excellent academy with the least disruption to one's lifestyle. Access information about faculties, consultancy and papers published.

Specialization: Specialization plays a vital role in the selection of a college. The more a student enjoys what they study, the better they do. Students should study what they love and employers recommend that students get a good basic education, worrying less about specialization and more about fundamental communication and learning skills. For many students the secret of a successful college experience is to focus on academic strengths and avoid subjects they dislike.

Facilities: Library, computers and internet facilities, hostel and mess are essentials in a college. Also check whether the college has tie-ups with other universities with regard to research and consulting facilities which is beneficial.

Social Life: Select the college which offers both education and develops personality. Cultural festivals, sports meet, technological gatherings moulds a person to a multi-faceted person. Such activities highlight the CV when presented to any industry.

Cost: Finance is the major concern of both parents and students. Find out the scholarships available and also education loans which are being provided by various banks.

Location: Location of a college plays a vital role in the selection process of a college. Though with increased transportation and communication facilities distance is not a major factor but parents are conservative about sending their children to far off locations.
