Indian Institution of Cartoonists

With many excellent institutions like the Indian Institution of Science, IndianCartoon Space Research Organisation, Indian Institute of Statistics, Indian Institute of Management, Indian Institute of Information Technology and others, the city is now recognised as the capital of many things.

In addition to them, a group of professional cartoonists want to add one more feather to the cap. It was evident to them that the field of cartooning in India lacks a national level organisation to recognise and reward talent. In order to showcase their art for future generations and to popularize the art among the masses, they are opening the Indian Institution of Cartoonists (IIC) in the first week of March 2001.

As V G Narendra, IIC's Managing Trustee puts it, "We have resolved to establish a charitable organisation called IIC. We wish to build bridges between different languages of the country, there by contributing to the national integrity."

The objectives of IIC are:

  • To institute a LIFE TIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD for excellence in cartooning    in India, for which eminent citizens will be the juries.

  • To institute ANNUAL AWARDS for best performance in English and other    Indian languages.

  • To organise cartoon contests nationally and internationally. Besides instituting    prizes for the winners of the contests, exhibition of their cartoons are also    planned in major cities.

  • To acquire permanent exhibition stands and a vehicle to carry them.

  • To construct a building called HOUSE OF CARTOONS that will include an    exhibition hall, library, auditorium and a picture hall. The library would have    books on cartoons and comics, which will be useful to young cartoonists and    research students.

  • To establish a museum of original cartoons and clay models of cartoon figuresA cartoon by B V Ramamurthy.  The exhibition hall would organise cartoon    exhibitions at state, national and    international levels.
  • With other plans like organising quiz contests, seminars, cartoon appreciation courses, IIC is planning to publish CARTOON WORLD or CARTOON INDIA INTERNATIONAL in which selected cartoons would be published.

B V Ramamurthy is the Chairman of IIC. N S Ponnappa and E P Unny are the Vice Chairmen of IIC. With Maya Kamath as the Financial Advisor, IIC has four Secretaries, Suresh Sawant, Venkat, Keshav and Sukumar. Vijay N Seth, Syam Mohan, Peter, Mohanachandran, B G Gujjarappa and B N Chandrakanth are the member trustees.

Young minds need the impetus and this can come about only if the media offers them space and the opening. IIC has come at the right time and in the right place to encourage young minds and offer them the opportunity to showcase their talent.
