to the top position, National Law School of India University
(NLSIU) has acquired the distinction of being the premier law
institution in India. What makes it the best? Some of the brightest
students in the county, excellent career guidance, top national
and international lecturers, moot court competitions, student
exchange programmes and a state-of-the-art digital library.
Legal education at NLSIU is a podium for bold experiments in
the field of law. International moot court competitions are
conducted and the faculty comprises of luminaries from India
and abroad. NLSIU is also the winner of the 1999 Philip-Jessup
International Moot Court Competition.
The school, sponsored by the Bar Council of India, was
formally established in 1986 under the Karnataka Act 22. The
Founder Director of this residential institution was Dr N
R Madhava Menon. The present Director Professor is Mr
N L Mitra. The first batch started on 1st July 1986 at Bangalore
Central College, and in the year 1992 they moved to their
own campus, located at Nagarbhavi. The management vests with
legal professionals and it is one of the best examples of Bar-Academy
and Bench co-operation.
The course is targetted to achieve professional legal educational
skills, which include research skills, legal writing, analytical
ability, decision-making and argumentative ability. The curriculum
also covers integrated subjects like social science, history,
philosophy, literature, sociology, economics, political sciences
and business law.
The number of seats available at the degree level are 80 and
at the Master's
level 50.
Admission criteria for integrated B.A (Bachelor Of Arts)
& LLB (Bachelor of Legal Laws, Honours) course:
Higher Secondary School or Pre University or its equivalent
examination.
Admission criteria for Masters Degree Programme: LLB
degree with a minimum of 50%.
Other courses available are M.Phil (Master of Philosophy),
J.S.D (Doctor in Jurisprudential Science) , LL.D (Doctor
of Law) and Ph.D (Doctor of Philosophy), MBL (Masters
of Business Laws), PGDHRL (Post Graduate Diploma Courses
in Human Rights Law), PGDML&E (Medical Law and Ethics)
and PGDEL (Environmental Law).
Degree admissions are solely on the basis of merit. Besides
this, a written examination of 200 marks is also conducted for
admissions. Five seats are reserved for foreign students, preferably
from the SAARC countries, who undergo a written test
for their aptitude in the English language.
Admission to the Post-graduate programmes are made on the following
criteria:
a. Past academic record at the qualifying examination.
b. Performance at the interview to determine the aptitude for
higher studies, research and specific branch
of legal studies.
c. The performance in the admission test conducted for the purpose.
Student exchange programmes with international law schools such
as the London School of Economics and The University
of Hamburg is conducted. Exchange programmes with countries
like France and USA are also in the offing.
Career Development at NLSIU:
Career guidance is divided into four segments:
Ø Firstly, an exposure to career opportunities.
ØSecondly, guidance to help students to choose special
clinical and seminar papers.
Ø Thirdly, student placement with law firms, lawyers,
and NGOs.
Ø Finally, to provide their students placement opportunities
with senior professionals, law firms and companies.
The Student Bar Association also organises student recruitment
every year.
NLSIU has taken Indian legal education onto the global map by
winning national and international recognition.
