'Gyanam Uttamam', an excerpt from the Bhagvad Gita that translates
into 'Knowledge is supreme' is the logo of the Bangalore-based
Indian Institute of Information Technology (iiit-b). The
logo reflects the spirit of today's IT, as the world moves from
data and information to the age of knowledge.
Iiit-b was born on September 15, 1999 with a mission
to build on the track record set by India, to enable the country
play a key role in the global IT context. Iiit-b operates from
the INNOVATOR tower of the International Technology
Park located at Whitefield in the city. Funded by
IT corporates with government backing, the institution is projected
as the new generation institute with the best of both the worlds
of IT- academics and industry.
The campus and structure:
Located on a vast campus, the institute offers a world-class
working environment for students, faculty and the supporting
staff. It houses nine classrooms (each equipped with large-size
screen projection for video presentations, video-conferencing
and digital recording facilities), fifteen faculty offices,
a library and a large student lounge, in addition to focus labs
and the incubation park. Fibre optic network with switched Ethernet
forms the backbone of iiit-b, with access to the Internet.
There
are three wings, namely, Education and Research, Think tank
and Technology Incubation Park. While the first wing concentrates
on graduate studies (Masters and Doctoral level) with a team
of researches and academicians, coupled with live projects by
men in the industry, Think tank undertakes policy oriented research
that address larger issues like a series of white papers, case
studies and the journal-'iiit-b'. Technology Incubation Park
is based on the Stanford model and helps in creating a 'Silicon
Valley' type entrepreneurial spirit for start-ups.
Focused labs and library:
The labs of iiit-b are industry funded and provide state-of-the-art
hardware, software and courseware on cutting-edge technology
to the students and faculty of the institution. The areas of
focus in these labs include Distributed computing, Embedded
systems, Entrepreneurial Resource Planning (ERP), Enterprise
Management, CAD/CAM, Next Generation Networks, Data Warehousing/Data
Mining, New Media, Visualisation and Advanced Databases.
The city IT-giant Infosys has funded the library of iiit-b,
to which the students have round the clock access. Materials
in the library are mostly in digital form (both off-line CD
and on-line) with access to high-speed network printing from
anywhere in the campus. Innovative features characterize the
unique computing environment at the institution, like well-configured
laptop for every student with access to all key softwares. Each
member of iiit-b has individual round-the-clock access to the
net, besides hardware and software from leading IT vendors like
Microsoft, IBM, Sun, Apple, Compaq, Oracle, Cisco, HP, SAP,
Novell, Adobe, PTC and many others.
The course structure:
* Post Graduate Program in IT for engineering graduates is the
flagship program of the institute that concentrates on foundations
of IT, cutting edge IT applications and a core set of B-School
courses.
* The Doctoral program is initiated with enough flexibility
so that both students and executives can pursue long-term research
in core areas of IT.
* Executive education for practicing engineers and managers
in all areas of IT is another feature of iiit-b.
The administration of the institute is in the hands of eminent
visionaries from the academia, government and industry. S Sadagopan,
a man synonymous with IT education, heads the institute. Well
known academicians from the best institutions from around the
world and visiting staff from IITs, IIMs and IIScs form the
faculty of iiit-b. The governing body include N Viswanathan,
MD, Bangalore Mass Rapid Transit Ltd as the Chairman and N R
Narayana Murthy, Chairman, Infosys, Som Mittal (CEO, Digital
India), Dewang Mehta (President, NASSCOM), Sanjoy Das Gupta
(IT Secretary to the Government of Karnataka) and other four
