The Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research
(JNCASR) w as
established in 1989 to promote scientific research at the highest
level. Government of India's Department of Science and Technology
incepted this in commemoration of the birth centenary of Pt.
Jawaharlal Nehru. Spread over twenty-two acres land in Jakkur,
the JNCASR started its operations in July 1994 in close association
with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). Scientists
of both IISc and JNCASR use infrastructure facilities available
at the IISc and those being developed by JNCASR.
Research and education: JNCASR has seven research units
for its activities like the Chemistry and Physics of Materials
Unit; Education Technology Unit; Evolutionary and Organismal
Biology Unit; Fluid Dynamics Unit; Geodynamics Unit; Molecular
Biology and Genetics Unit and Theoretical Sciences Unit. In
association with IISc, the centre has two units - Chemical Biology
Unit and Condensed Matter Theory Unit.
JNCASR offers Integrated Ph.D, regular Ph.D and Master's Degree.
Integrated Ph.D is offered in Chemistry and Physics of Materials
for B.Sc graduates,
who are selected on an all-India basis. While the centre offers
course work and research facilities, Manipal Academy of Higher
Education awards the degree. Successful post-graduates who have
completed the entrance tests like GATE/CSIR-NET UGC JRF and
IISc tests are offered with regular Ph.D.
Education unit (ETU): Established in 1996, the ETU is
involved in producing educational materials and conducting several
workshops for the benefit of both students and faculty. Achievements
of ETU:
Conducted a workshop on low-cost equipment in chemical
education in October 1996.
Three workshops sponsored by the Karnataka government were
conducted in 1997-98.
Conducted six workshops on 'Small scale chemistry experiments'
for junior college lecturers and students in 1998-99.
Plans to release a 'School chemistry kit' for high school
students that contains chemical components and booklet to
perform experiments easily.
Computer, library and workshop facilities at JNCASR: The
computer laboratory maintains the LAN and Internet. Under
Dr Balasubramanian Sundaram, the lab also provides for domain
name service lookups within the campus for desktops at the
offices/laboratories, a web proxy/cache service, a facility
for emails, and a web/ftp server.
Document collection in the library is about 2610 books, 65
subscribed journals, 3417 bound volumes, monograph publications
and 20 conference proceedings. It also subscribes CD-ROMs
in Physics, Chemistry, Material science, Biotechnology, Biochemistry
and Biophysics. The catalogue of the library is computerized
using LIBSYS software package.
Dr. A Raghurama Raju is the faculty incharge of the centre's
workshop. Equipment maintained at the workshop (for general
use of the academic community) includes drilling machine,
lathe, grinding machine, sheet-cutting machine, welding machine
and others.
The centre has intellectuals like Prof. V Krishnan as
Acting President and Prof. C N R Rao as the Honorary
President. The advisory committee includes Prof. H Sharat
Chandra (Honorary Professor), Prof. M K Chandrashekaran (Professor),
Prof. Madhav Gadgil (IISc, Bangalroe), Prof. S S Jha (Director,
TIFR, Mumbai), Prof. N Kumar (Director, RRI, Bangalore), Prof.
P Rama Rao (Chairman, AERB, Mumbai), Prof. R A Mashelkar (Director-General,
CSIR, New Delhi), Prof. R Narasimha (Director, NIAS, Bangalore)
and N Nagaraja Rao (Administrative Officer).
