The University of Mysore is among the foremost institutions
in India, and is an enduring symbol in the sphere of higher
learning. Found by the Maharaja of Mysore, Sri Krishnaraja
Wodeyar IV, who became its first chancellor and his Dewan,
Sir M Visveswaraya in 1916, the University came into
existence on the basis of a report on educational progress
in the US and Australia.
The University has an enviable spread and presence across
Karnataka. It has 5 constituent University colleges, 122 affiliated
colleges across 4 districts and 37 Post Graduate departments
in Manasagangotri including 2 satellite PG campuses.
It is a pioneer in its field in more ways than one, as it
is the first university outside the domain of the English
administration in India and Karnataka, and the sixth ever
in India. It is of the affiliating type and turned autonomous
in 1956.
The
main campus sprawls across over 700 acres at the western end
of the picturesque Kukkarahalli Lake. The headquarters
at Crawford Hall flanks its eastern side. The name
Mansagangotri is inspired by its meaning, (fountainhead
of the Ganges of the Mind), by Kuvempu. Besides Crawford Hall,
which is an architectural landmark of Mysore, Jayalakshmi
Vilas Mansion is a folklore museum and houses some of
the Post Graduate departments and the administrative office.
Over the years, the original university has given rise to
the Bangalore, Mangalore, Kuvempu, and Karnataka Open University.It
has a very large student body under its wings, with 53,000
under the 122 affiliated and 5 constituent colleges, the rest
of their dnd PG levels, 22 PG courses in arts and humanities,
24 PG courses under science, 6 M.Phil courses, including 6
other Pepartments account for 3500 students encompassing special
research, PG courses and the like. It also runs a number of
eng to the demands from diverse quarters. Students, researchers,
teachers, and various support networks all look to grow witmployment-oriented
diploma courses and certificate programmes. The postgraduate
departments are reputed for excellence in advanced studies
and research, and have attracted projects and grants worth
crores of rupees from many national and interighteousnessrnational
institutions.
The University is equipped with unparalleled infrastructure
to meet all the demands of our day and age. The library
offers a collection of over 8 lakh books, 2,400 journal
titles and 1 lakh volumes of journals, and is well-supported
by CD-ROM, Internet services, in addition to resource-sharing
arrangements. The Computer Centre has state of the art facilities
for research, teaching and Education training. The main campus
features an amphitheatre, an auditorium, a swimming pool,
and modern hostels for both women and men.
The University is well networked with lively contact with
prestigious universities and institutions abroad to facilitate
greater academic, technical and cultural exchange. The university
has ably supported the cause of higher education and research
with across the century, and it hopes to carry on this tradition

The University of Mysore offers a wide range of courses in

ratio, electives and other parameters have all been carefully
chosen to maximize effect and best suit the needs of students
who all hail from diverse backgrounds .The syllabus is updated
on a regular basis to reflect the changing faces of knowledge
and technological advancements. It has 7 certificate courses,
23 diploma courses at both the Under Graduate and Graduate
courses and PhD across all disciplines. Its administration

the institution and contribute to its progress. Its emblem
owes its origin to the royal heritage of Mysore and reflects
the spirit of and its motto "Na Hi Jnanena Sadrusham"
(Nothing compares with knowledge) echoes the sentiments
