The National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS)
is located in
Bangalore as a new centre of the Tata Institute of Fundamental
Research (Mumbai) in the campus of the University of Agricultural
Sciences (UAS) at the Gandhi Krishi Vigyan Kendra. It
is permitted to perform basic research in the frontier areas
of biology like Biochemistry, Biophysics and Bioinformatics,
Genetics and Development, Cellular Organization and Signaling
and Neurobiology
Academic programmes: The Centre has developed a vigorous
program of post-graduate teaching and training. It admits
research scholars who work towards a Ph D. It also has a special
program of M Sc for talented Junior Scholars who join after
B Sc. Both Ph D and M Sc students can audit courses taught
at the Indian Institute of Science. The emphasis in both programs
is on independent research. NCBS Scholars can obtain degrees
from Bombay University, Mysore University or from the Manipal
Academy of Higher Education.
NCBS organises workshops as satellite sessions of research
workshops that the Meetings-and-Workshops office organizes.
The first of these teaching workshops was Developmental Neurobiology
in conjunction with the workshop on Contemporary Issues in
Olfaction. Later, it has organised other workshops like PCR
technologies and Neurophysiology. Many professors and faculty
members drop in at NCBS as guest faculty from various institutions
of India like Delhi, Pune, Hyderabad, Lucknow and other places.
Facilities: The academic building of 80,000
square feet has laboratories of 1,200 to 1,500 square feet
to suit individual group requirements. Each lab may have a
separate room for microscopy, tissue culture or for electro
physiology. There are also several areas for common use of
equipment by different groups. They have space for collaborative
projects with industry or other research centres. The academic
block has one lecture hall and one seminar hall per floor.
The largest lecture hall can seat 100 people, and plans are
there to maximize it to 300 with another spacious hall.
The library is a four-floor centerpiece of the academic
building and its reading room commands a panoramic view of
much of the NCBS campus. It subscribes to the top international
journals in the fields of interest of NCBS faculty and has
active links with other scientific libraries in Bangalore,
including IISc and NIMHANS. Journals in the digital format
are expected make its way into the library.
The new animal house has about 20 animal/experimental
rooms in the first phase, and a separate wing for support
services. All rooms will have once-through air conditioning.
The Local Area Network (LAN) has 275 nodes installed, offering
users 10Mbps shared connectivity to the desktop. In addition
to this, the campus housing is also provided with Ethernet
connectivity.
Monoclonal and Oligonucleotide Synthesis and DNA
Sequencing Facility (OSDSF): The OSDSF caters to the requirements
of researchers at NCBS for standard oligonucleotide synthesis
and provide sequencing support as well.
Workshops: Workshops are common facilities for repair,
construction and prototyping of electronics and mechanical
items. They maintain a stock of commonly used items that can
be borrowed or purchased.
As a part of the institutes' activities, it has been a practice
to organise several events, workshops, and seminars. Many
of the members of the institute are into conducting/attending
other programmes that were conducted in other institutions
located in other parts of the world.
