When Mathematics Divides as a Spectrum

LinkagesAre you one of those who have always wondered how the Pythagoras theorem holds good for right angled triangles or about the path traced by a cycloid. Then you would have found answers in the recent exhibition organized at the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium by the Bangalore Association of Science Education (BASE).

Students from Vani Education Centre, National High School, BBUL Jain Vidyalaya, Maruti Vidyalaya, St. Ann's and Vijaya High Shcools volunteered to educate mathematics enthusiasts. They explained twenty-nine models, topics for which were drawn from the high school syllabi. Some of the practical demonstrations that covered a wide array of mathematical topics were speciality of triangles, pantographs, mathematical liquid, and Euler's formula for polyhedron among many others.

CycloidBASE's Madhusudan H R said that the event is a part of their educational activities, besides their science club activities held every Saturday for students studying in high schools and colleges. "Two months ago, we conducted an exhibition on the astronomical theme. Our next event will focus on physics topics like mechanics for high school students", he said. He also added that the events like Science in Action and Mathematics in Action receive a good response of around two thousand visitors a day.

The three-day event held from October 20-22, 2000, saw over 6000 visitors.
Mathematical liquid

In this model, a glass pipe is filled with a liquid. The word CHOICE and SELECTION are written on a paper and placed under the liquid. When the words are inverted and seen through the liquid, the word SELECTION changes but not the word CHOICE. This is because of a mathematical concept known as symmetry. Some of the English letters appear the same even when inverted.

Factorization of trinomials of the type ax2+bx+c can be illustrated with factorization blocks. It comprises a few squares of side 'x' units. The number of squares is optional. Then we have several rectangular strips of length 'x' units and breadth one unit. There are also a number of squares of length one unit. The thickness of all the pieces must be the same for good visual appeal.

Pythagorus theorem

This is one of the most popular theorems in geometry for several centuries now. This theorem found a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for having more than 400 proofs. This model demonstrates that the sum of the area of the two triangles on the sides of a right-angled triangle is equal to the area of the triangle on the hypotenuse.
