The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National
Standards Body of India, is a statuatory body set up under
the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986. It comprises
members representing the Industry, Consumer Organisations,
Scientific and Research Institutes, Professional Bodies, Technical
Institutions, Central Ministries, State Governments and Members
of Parliament.
Licences to use the ISI (Indian Standards Institute) mark
are granted to manufactureres under the Certification Mark
Scheme operated under the provisions of the Bureau of
Indian Standards Act, 1986. The Standard Mark is unique and
is notified in the Gazette of India.
What
does the standard mark convey?
It conveys that the product carrying the ISI mark conforms
to the relevant Indian Standard certified by an independent,
third-party i.e. BIS.
How does a consumer know for sure if the ISI mark is genuine?
For his/her part, the consumer has to beware of spurious
imitations of the Standard Mark. The standard symbol comes
with a width to height ratio of 4 : 3, and the colour is black.
What should the Consumer do, in case of a grievance?
In
case the consumer is not happy with the quality of the ISI
marked product, he/she should write to the Public Grievance
Officer in the nearest BIS office or to the Director
(Consumer Affairs & Public Grievances) at BIS Headquarters,
New Delhi.
On hearing from the consumer, BIS initiates necessary investigation
and if the complaint is established, arranges for free replacement/repair,
as the case may be.
