Men like liberated women who are not married to them.....
Your experience as Mayamrigadha Malavika........
The role I played in Mayamriga was a ‘no compromise’
role. My idea of compromising was for society,
not the family. My character in this is that of the protagonist,
I won a lot of appreciation from the masses for this character.
And adding to all this was my working with a good director like
T N Seetharam. After the serial, I received thousands
of letters asking me for help on making marriage decisions.
Further, the role
I played and the kind of person I am are similar. Initially, the role was
director driven, but slowly I started contributing to the character.
Malavika as an actress...
She started her career in acting at the tender age of nine,
the first and the lead role as 'Krishna' in G V Iyer's
'Krishnavataar' on National Doordarshan and as
'Rajakumari' in Prema
Karanth's 'Makkala Rajakumari', a children’s panorama film.
Her television ventures include numerous Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam
and Kannada serials. Her sensitive portrayal of the role of
the protagonist in T N Seetharam's popular 'Mayamruga'
won her the love and respect of, not only the masses, but
also intellectuals. Her intense performance has practically
catapulted her to the status of a cult figure in Karnataka and
has won her several awards.
I see myself as a director........I'm not satisfied being
just an actress. I believe awareness building is the most important
and a basic need through a medium such as television.
It is one of the most effective ways to reach out to
people’s minds and hearts.
What do you think is liberation for young women today...
The idea of liberation has changed. I can give you an
example of college going girl. I have been to various colleges
where I have seen different levels of liberation thoughts. For
instance, for a girl from Maharani's college, liberation means
getting the opportunity to
go to college, where as for a girl studying in MCC, liberation
means going home late night, going to a pub and so on. I'm not
generalizing....of course, there are exceptions.
Law,
Media and You...
The most important thing for me is to educate the masses,
especially the middle class, via the television. I sincerely
believe it is important for the general public to understand
legal laws. I am going to be directing a serial called 'Agni'.
This serial will have 13 episodes with experts like leading
advocate Shivkumar dealing with instances of actual
cases. Television for the middle class and cinema for the younger
generation, with morality and reality,
is very essential.
Malavika as a Lawyer...
After five years of intense legal education, she graduated
with a LLB degree from Bangalore University securing
the third rank. As a student, she served as the Student
- Editor of her college journal. She has been a keen participant
and winner of many a national and international Moot court competition,
including the prestigious Arbitration Moot organized
by the UNCITRAL {UN commission for International Trade
Law} at Vienna, Austria. As a student, she has toured
Europe and Russia on student exchange programmes.
Malavika
and Madhyam...
Since her graduation, she has been associated with Madhyam,
a development communications organization that explores the
interface between media, culture, communication and development.
As a counselor at Madhyam, she counsels women on their legal
status and rights and conducts workshops for counselors, professionals
and NGO persons. She also functions as the Assistant Editor
of Madhyam's journal called 'Madhyam'.
