Kashinath, who has created a niche
for himself as a comedy hero, director and producer, is back
after a short break. Once again, he is all set to entertain
cine goers with his new Kannada and Telugu bi-lingual film,
which is under production and it is yet to be titled. For more
than a decade this Kannada comedy hero has tickled his audience
into laughter. At a time when so much vulgarity has crept into
films, Kashinath's comedy entertainers promise clean and wholesome
fun. Besides, his films convey socially relevant messages.
His films like Aparichita and Anubhava were a major success
and made him a household name in Karnataka. In an interview
to bangalorebest.com, Kashinath shared his views on Kannada
films and his future plans...
The excerpts of the interview...
His initial venture into films…
When I was in high school, I was very interested in science
and wanted to become a scientist, since I had taken my uncle,
a scientist in the US, as a role model. But by the time I
finished my BSc., I was fascinated with dramas. From dramas
I shifted into short film making. I produced, directed and
acted in a short silent film called "Slip". That brought me
praise from the then renowned short film critic Marie Set
in Canada and other critics. Excited by this, I ventured into
Kannada films despite my family's caution about this unacquainted
field. I directed and produced Aparoopada Athithigalu, a full
length comedy film with a wholly new cast and technicians.
It was well appreciated for its innovativeness.
The type of films being made in Kannada…
Nowadays, most Kannada films are remakes. Apart from these
remakes, other films are being made as per the taste of the
audience. The audience's tastes have changed and we have to
accept the change and produce films. My opinion is that it
is better to make a good film even though it may take time.
I like to make films with less risk.
The film personalities introduced by you to Kannada cinema…
Sunil Kumar Desai, Manohar, Upendra, Balakrishna, Murali Mohan,
and several other actors.
Changes in Kannada cinema over the years…
With the wide reach of the television, people limit themselves
to the TV for soft themes. When they go to see a movie in
the theatre, they look for thrills. That is what is happening
presently. If your film offers thrills, it will be well received;
otherwise, it will be rejected by the audience.
A memorable moment in your film career…
I can not forget the moments when the press and media lifted
me up with their appreciation on my performance in the film
Aparichita.
The film you are working on now…
Presently, I am working on a bi-lingual Kannada and Telugu
film. The title has not yet been decided. The film is planned
to be completed in January.
On piracy of film cassettes…
Piracy of film cassettes is a lethal blow to the Kannada entertainment
industry. It is very difficult to curb the piracy of film
cassettes unless strict legal action is implemented as per
the Copy Rights Act. Those who pirate cassettes are living
at our cost, living on our death. Whoever violates the Copy
Rights Act should be punished and fined heavily.
The person you admire most…
I adore Charlie Chaplin. He makes us laugh and think as well.
Your dream project…
I want to make a full length comedy film in English with a
universal theme and philosophy.
Your suggestion to newcomers in the field of cinema….
One should be very careful before choosing this field. It
is a fiercely competitive field. To succeed you need to put
in all your talent and effort. Only then will success come
your way.
The films you have made so far?
I have acted in 31 films so far, besides directing 11 and producing
nine. Films like Aparachita, Anubhava, Ananthana Avanthara have
been dubbed into Telugu, Tamil and Hindi as well. Beshaque is
a Hindi film I have directed and produced.
