G.V.
Iyer
Director
Born
in 1917 in an orthodox Brahmin family, G.V Iyer went
on to become a film maker with the most unorthodox approach.
With only a sketchy education, he joined a drama troupe in his
teens. He began by painting signboards and from 1953 onwards
commenced writing dramas, scripts, lyrics, and then tried his
hand at direction. One of his most acclaimed films is Ranadheera
Kanteerava. His movie, Adi Shankaracharya,
on India's great philosopher(the first ever to be made in Sanskrit),
won national and international laurels. Hamsageethe,
also directed by him introduced a new idiom in the style, approach
and the grammar of film making. He has also directed films on
other great Indians are Madhvacharya, Swami Vivekanada
and Ramanujacharya. His award winning work, Bhagawad
Geetha was lauded by even the learned interpreters of Indian
philosophy. Self taught and self motivated, he has earned a
respectable place in world of cinema.
