B C Patil - A cop and hero

B C Patil
A gentleman to the core, Sub- Inspector, B C Patil entered Kannada cinema as a villain eight years ago. Soon villainous roles gave way to heroic ones, and today Kannada cine goers accept him as a hero. Now the hero is on his way to becoming a director too!

Besides directing his forthcoming film, 'Lankesha', Patil also plays the role of the hero in it. The film, under production, has Patil sporting a huge moustache.

In an interview to Bangalorebest.com at his home in Bangalore, Patil shared his views about his career.

On his entry into the film field….

My interest in acting goes back to my school and college days when I donned paint and powder to enact roles in dramas. I got a lucky break when Kannada Director Sunil Kumar Desai happened to watch one of my performances on stage and offered me a small role in 'Sangharsha'. In the same director's next film, 'Nishkarsha' I was given a villain's role. The film went on to win 33 awards for its novelty. Really, Sangharsha was a break for me.

Besides acting, you are also producing films……..

I lost money by producing films. Though the films I produced did not fare well commercially, I had the satisfaction of introducing new directors like A N Jayaramaiah to the Kannada cinema. But I am determined to succeed as an actor in Kannada cinema and that persistence stimulated me to produce another film, Kaurava, in which I played hero for the first time. Prema was the heroine. The film was a success and it filled me with confidence because Kannada cinema audience had accepted me as a hero. Commercially also the film brought me a success. From then onwards, offers began to come to me from outside banners as well.

About offers from other language films…..

For the time being I am committed to Kannada films. I had an offer for a villain's role in a Tamil film, but I did not accept it as I was busy with a Kannada film at the same time.

You are a Sub Inspector of police by profession. How do you feel when you don a policeman's role in films?

In few films like 'Dalavaayi' and 'Kaanunu' I have played a police officer. In films, police roles give the audience the thrill and entertainment they want whereas it is not so in my real cop life.

Your role model ……

Dr Rajkumar is my role model in Kannada cinema. I also admire Nana Patekar's action filled roles.

The films you have acted as a hero…….

Premachari, Dalavaayi, Channappa Channe Gowda, are some of the films where I have acted as a hero in recent times. Krishnarjuna, Shaapa, and two other unnamed films are my forthcoming films. As an SI, I am very grateful to the police department for allowing me to go on leave for film shootings. My department is encouraging me to pursue my film career as well.

Now, here is a hero on and off screen. Patil, the reel-life and real-life cop, spends his days fighting tangible and celluloid villans.
