M.S. Satyu is characterised by a single-minded perseveran ce
and determination to stick to the art (direction) he adored
and went on to master. He quit college to join films. But
the offer to assist filmmaker Chetan Anand came after four
years of joblessness. He is modesty personified …. "Success
followed success. Sometimes deserved and at times undeserved."
Satyu's widely acclaimed Urdu movie Garam Hawa was
based on the quandary of the Muslims in India after the partition.
This movie, which bagged the National Award in 1974 and got
rave reviews from critics, was also invited to the Cannes
Film Festival.
He has incorporated the art, culture and the conventions
of populace dispersed all over India. This is expressed in
his directorial work with serials in Tamil, Kannada and a
Hindi serial based on the Malayalam novel by the Jnanapeeth
awardee Thakazhi Sivankara Pillai. Media work for child ren
has been his pet project with short films such as Irshad,
Ek Tha Chotu Ek Tha Motu - a children's feature film and
Swarnadeep - a TV serial for children (which is still
under production) based on stories from the celebrated Panchatantra.
This is an attention-grabbing story about a village tailor
who impersonates Lord Vishnu and the amusement that it engenders
when he finally meets the real Vishnu.
Kurukshetra to Kargil, his latest play was extremely
well received by the critics and the audience alike. Some
of his other theatre work includes his involvement in Alyque
Padamsee's theatre Group, Alkazi's Theatre unit,
Balraj Sahani's Juhu Art Theatre and Nataranga and Samudhaya,
theatre groups in Bangalore.
He is presently affiliated with the IPTA, Mumbai.
Some of the major stage productions directed by M S Satyu
in association with the IPTA are Kaifi Azmi's 'Aakhri Shama',
Balraj Sahani's 'Sookshmaroop', Javed Siddiqui's 'Rakshas'
and many others. In August 1988, he established Cinema
Ityadhi, a non-linear editing studio for films and video
productions at Bangalore.
Some of the awards that have been bestowed on him include
the Padmashree in 1975, Karnataka Rajyotsava Honour
in 1982 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 1993.
