Movies
are a form of entertainment that most of us enjoy. But why does
this enjoyment stop at the stage of just watching them? By and
large the art of making movies interests a good number of
people. But what stops them from pursuing this interest is the
belief that supposedly film-making is an art mastered by only
the talented and gifted. This is a myth! And Film etc,
an institute, which undertakes classes in film-making, sets
out to disprove it.
Film etc offers a course, which equips a beginner with
every aspect of filmmaking. As the name signifies, at Film etc,
the ABC of filmmaking is gone into. The different stages
of making a film - from concept to execution are explained.
Indian Cinema, the history of cinema, the masters and masterpieces
of world cinema are introduced during the course of lectures.
These lectures are supported with screening of movies to study
different types of films such as feature, documentary, short
film, video and TV.
An interesting accompaniment is an exposition of the art of
reading and understanding the grammar of a film. Reading a film
includes analysing and assessing what categorises movies into
good, excellent, classic or just plain mediocre. A set of rules
administers how the moving images are brought together to form
an idea.
The 'grammar of the film' is based on these rules. These canons
are identical to the syntax that governs the words forming a
sentence.
The course is designed and conducted by Ajit Hari, who
has a Diploma in Film Editing and a Post Graduate Diploma in
Film Direction from the Film and TV Institute of India (FTII),
Pune. He has directed and edited several short films and documentaries.
He has also lectured on cinema and conducted several film workshops
in Bangalore, Chennai and Trivandrum.
