The Bangalore Film Society is an association of people
with a passion for movies and a concern for socially relevant
issues. It attaches great importance to the aesthetic
value of a film and acknowledges the importance of the medium.By
introducing audiences to movies that have gained critical acclaim,
the Film Society has successfully created
a dialogue between people with diverse cultures and languages.
Since twenty years of its inception, it has showcased many internationally
acclaimed movies from directors representing countries such
as Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic and Germany.
The
Film Society also holds screening of films on socially relevant
issues and documentaries in slums, schools and other related
venues. In association with Vimochana, Forum for Women's
Rights, the Women's Film Festival is held featuring some
of the relevant issues on women, their social experience and
their portrayal in Cinema.
Some of the regular
activities of the Film Society are:

Screening of feature films,
short films and documentaries from India and other countries.

Conducting
film festivals and retrospectives of outstanding film
directors followed by symposia and discussion on films.

Publishing film analysis
after the screening.
The Film Society also publishes Deep Focus, a quarterly
which is a serious film journal for people who recognise cinema
as the most potent medium of expression. Apart from carrying
critiques of cinema. s masters, it regularly carries writings
on the socio-cultural and political significance of popular
cinema. It is a collective effort from a group of film enthusiasts
from Bangalore with an advisory body of eminent scholars in
the field from India and abroad.
