Do you spend as much time buying a comb or brush, as
you would buying a pair of
shoes? Do you dry clean your silk saris more often then you clean
your brushes? If the answers are 'no', then you obviously need to
take these simple styling tools more seriously.
Most people ignore the importance of brushes and tools
when talking about hair maintenance and care. In fact,
people spend a lot of money on hair products but tend not to pay enough
attention to the type of comb or brush that is suited
to their hair type.
Here's a guide to help you choose the brush and
comb that is most suitable for you.
Brushes
Brushes help remove tangles and knots
and smooth the hair. They stimulate circulation in the scalp,
promoting hair growth. Constant running of a brush though
your hair can cause it to stick together on account of the static
created, so it's best to buy brushes made from
non-static materials to avoid that from happening.
Brushes are made of bristles, which may be natural,
or synthetic ones like plastic, nylon or even wire.
Natural bristles made from animal hair are closest to
human hair on account of the hair's keratin
content. They are known to be good for daily brushing and grooming.
Plastic and nylon bristled brushes are suitable for people who style
their hair regularly, considering that they are heat-resistant,
which makes them perfect to use when blow-drying the hair.
The bristles are embedded in a wooden, plastic or moulded rubber
base and set in tufts or rows. The spacing
of the tufts plays an important role - generally speaking, the wider
the spacing between the rows, the easier it is for the brush
to move through the hair.
Combs
A good comb should have saw-cut teeth
with each individual tooth cut into the comb so that there are no
sharp edges to cause cuts or abrasions on the scalp.
The tips should be rounded so that they
provide a massaging effect and improve blood circulation
in the scalp.
The width of the teeth of the combs should be an important
consideration depending on the type of hair you have.
The thicker the hair, the wider the teeth
should be spaced. If you have fine textured hair, use
combs with narrow teeth. Afro combs, which
have extremely wide teeth, are perfect to groom curly hair,
which is delicate and prone to breaking.
Fine tail combs, on the other hand, are used by hairstylists
to create partings or to hold the hair when
trimming it. Hair can also be groomed using a styling comb. You can
also use a wide toothed comb to disentangle knots and
comb in the conditioner when washing the hair. Again, remember to
buy combs that are made of materials that are non-static.
Maintenance
Brushes and combs should be cleaned
as often as possible - by pulling out the dead hair
entangled in them and by washing them in warm, soapy water.
Plastic, nylon and wire bristles are easier to clean than the natural
ones. Don't share your brush or comb with anyone because
you could contract scalp infections or even dandruff from other people.
And finally, buy lighter coloured combs because it
is easier to detect the dirt on them - and you'll clean
them up faster!
