Buying high-heeled shoes

A good pair of shoes allows you to forget your feet. An ill fitting pair can plague you the whole day besides causing other long term problems like callouses and blisters. High heeled shoes can put a large amount of strain on the muscles of your feet. Keep the following tips in mind when shopping for high heels.

  • Always buy shoes made of genuine leather and cloth because they stretch and absorb moisture and sweat.

  • Man made leather is good only for sandals and open toe shoes. Pumps and boots made of man made leather uppers should not be worn for more than 4 hours per day.

  • High heels look swanky, but shiny leather and non-rippled man made leather soles are slippery too. All high-heeled shoes, especially those with spike or thin heels, should have no-slip pads pasted on the bottom of the soles.

  • Some high heeled shoes have metal shanks under the soles to prevent the sole from bending, cracking or wearing out. This makes the shoe very rigid and may prevent foot injury. But, because the foot cannot bend while walking, it increases the strain on the ankles and knees.

  • Platform shoes are not for professional women. They look girlish and draw more attention to how short one is. High platforms are like walking on stilts and look more awkward than sexy.

  • It is advisable to buy high heels with ankle straps as they keep the foot secure inside the shoe, preventing the shoe from falling off or possible injury. Beides, ankle straps help one balance oneself and walk better in high heels.

  • Thin ankle straps look good on skinny legs and broad ankle straps look good on bigger legs. Removable straps are an advantage because they can be take off and put back when needed.

  • Straps and open toe shoes should not partially cover any of the toe nails as it is likely to cause discomfort or even injury while standing or walking.
