It is a small place with no flashy window dressing or swanky décor.
But when you enter, you discover a treasure trove. It could even actually
surprise you a little because it is difficult to imagine that jute
can be used in so many innovative ways. Once here, you realise that
this versatile yarn can be turned into jackets, slippers or for that
matter e ven
chairs!!
Jute Cottage, situated in Cambridge Layout on Sai Baba Temple
Road, Ulsoor, was conceptualised and begun by a family who have traditionally
been involved in the business of Jute. Their jute items come all the
way from West Bengal (from where the family hails). As Mr P A Khan,
a family member and also a partner, points out, "In a small
way we are trying to create a market for the rural artisans, whose
craft, we believe, should not die for lack of marketing."
 The
best part of the showroom is its affordable pricing. Lovely wall hangings
come at just Rs 30 to 60/-. Files made entirely of jute will cost
you Rs 90/-. Attractive swings with backrests meant for tiny tots
come reasonably priced at Rs 350/- a piece.
That's not all, they have a very chic collection of jewellery too.
Designing jewellery in jute is really a pioneering effort. Ear rings,
necklaces, bracelets, et al, range from Rs 30/- to Rs 150/-. They
also have a collection of greeting cards for all occasions made of
jute. Odds and ends like key-chains, foot-mats, tea-coasters are also
available here.
All in all, the Jute Cottage caters to the tastes of as many different
people as possible.
