For centuries, gold and diamond have symbolized power, mystique,
magic and love. Jewellery was an important accessory for both
men and women in ancient times too, and was high on the list
of priorities, immediately after food and shelter. The emphasis
remains, although the medium has changed.
Fashion jewellery is 'in' again! Steel rings and
chains, oxidised trinkets,  wooden
beads, stone pendants, pretty bead necklaces, silver anklets,

rudraksha lockets, pendants of pebbles are all available in
vibrant colours. Today, these fancy items are very popular,
especially with the younger generation. People enjoy wearing
fashion jewellery for many reasons, like its low cost, weightlessness,
vast range and the modern look. And now the trend is to
affix them on to garments like kurtas, dupattas, skirts and
jeans. They look stunning - quite out of the ordinary!
It's not an uncommon sight seeing young people making a bee
hive to fancy  stores
looking for unique designs. Ear studs, bracelets, rings, chains
are popular not only with young ladies; boys too go for
them in a big way. Students seem to prefer stone-studded jewellery,
black/ white metal and oxidised metal. The types of material
used in the making of this jewellery is amazing - bone, shell,
plastic, metal, leather, pebbles, semi precious stones and just
about anything that can add novelty to the creation.
 Why
has fashion jewellery become so popular? Many people think
the credit goes to film stars. Mohammad Zubiulla, the
owner of a fancy jewellery store in Shrungar Complex on M G
Road, recollects that customers, while they make their purchases,
often discuss the costume jewellery worn by models and film
stars. He is sure that the buying is influenced by these icons.
Hawkers as well as fancy stores on Commercial Street
and Brigade Road stock some very unusual pieces of fashion
jewellery. You will also find them at shopping complexes like
Devatha Plaza and Shrungar Complex.
Go for that wild, gypsy look and join the bandwagon of
the fashion makers!
