It
is so easy to miss. Inconspicuously tucked away behind snazzier
showrooms, Bhagatram & Sons, opposite Hajee Omar Showroom
on Commercial Street, has 52 years of experience in catering
to the city's sweet tooth. Its sweets and savouries - Samosas,
Jalebis, Kalakand, Pedas, Badam Barfis, Gulab Jamoons, Milk
Cakes, Mysore Pak, Rasmalai, Sonpapadi and many more - are always
in great demand, festival or otherwise.
Bhagatram Jamnadas, the founder of the famous sweet stall,
established this place way back in 1948. His is one of those
heartrending partition stories when the whole family was uprooted
from Karachi and migrated to Bangalore. His two sons Giridhar
and Sundar manage the shop with the same dedication that their
father is known for.
"The
whole of Bangalore is our customer," claims a proud Giridhar,
the eldest son of Bhagatram. There are 15 people to assist him
in the shop and many a time they have had to face labour problems
too. But the labour problem is minimized to some extent as both
brothers also manage to do much of the ground work.
Bhagatram is specially famous for hot Gulab Jamoons, Rasmalais
and Sonpapadis. The price of the sweets range from Rs 4.00
per piece to Rs 10.00. Every day
500-5000 pieces of Jamoons, 500-600 Samosas and 10-20 kgs of
Jalebis are prepared and sold too!
They
also accept outside catering orders and many companies have
often placed huge orders with them. They make a variety of sweets
for different festivals. The Gauri Ganesha festival sees an increased
demand for mouth watering Laddus, Boondi and Khajoor Ke Laddus
- all supposedly favourites of Lord Ganesha.
"The love and trust of the people and my father's hard work
has paid off and that is how, by God's grace, we have been doing
very well," says a shy Giridhar.
So, if you have a celebration on the anvil let Bhagatram
in on it. Then wait for those delicious sweets and savouries
to arrive at your doorstep.
