Mav alli
Tiffin Room, which also goes by the more popular name of MTR,
evokes nostalgia, and good taste for its loyal patrons spanning
generations.
An institution in itself, it was established in 1924 and is famed
far and wide for its authentic South Indian food. Parampalli
Yajnanarayana Maiya, a man with a visionary zeal far ahead of
his times, founded MTR.
MTR still retains its 'old world' flavour and commitment to values
that have stood the test of time. They have a commitment to purity,
quality and hygiene which is a marvel in our harried times. All
the changes, which have been incorporated, have been to ensure more
effective service and value for their customers.
MTR is run by South Canara Brahmins and they serve pure vegetarian
fare. Their dishes are made from ingredients brought direct ly
from the growers and original manufacturers. Their search for culinary
excellence has literally taken them places; the asafoetida is from
Afghanistan, saffron from Kashmir, Jeera from Rajasthan and fiery
chillies from the Indian coastal region.
MTR is unstoppable in its zeal to achieve the corporate dream of
reinventing a 75-year-old Udupi Brahmin business into India's foremost
convenience food company.
In its bid to cross new frontiers, they have been marketing ready
mixes, spice powders, masala, pickles and vermicelli since the early
90's. The brand enjoys dominant market shares across most of South
India. They also have leveraged the advantage of being located in
Bangalore, which is a growing technopolis, by opening outlets in
Infosys and Wipro to cater to nearly 80% of the IT professionals.
MTR has posted phenomenal growth rates and has mopped up volume
business by leaps
and bounds. The company has moved into an aggressive brand-marketing
mode by having more than 100 products under its belt, which are
manufactured at its eight plants. They have also made successful
forays into the ice cream segment and shrugged of their SSI image
by product segment expansion through conceptual super shops.
As MTR has grand dreams of moving up the value chain and become
a leading food company, it hardly faces any real threats. All the
while it also continues to do what it does best - provide lip-smacking
dishes to all who enter its portals.
