It's
party time! Susan R John has come down all the way from the
West Indies to charm Bangaloreans with her yummy Caribbean delicacies.
Her restaurant, Sue's Food Place lies bang opposite the
Maha Maruti Service Station in Indiranagar. Susan came down
to India and chose to start off in Bangalore as this vibrant city
responds to new ventures. The restaurant was set up in 1998, and
it is one of its kinds in the whole of the city. Susan learnt to cook
all kinds of Caribbean food from her father, including desserts and
a variety of drinks. She is actually the master chef of her restaurant
and has trained four cooks who have now mastered Caribbean cuisine.
The
restaurant is busy from afternoon till night. With dim lights and
the sound of foot-tapping Caribbean music, the place has a very
informal atmosphere. The moment one enters, the smell of seafood
tantalizes the nostrils and one instantly starts to feel hungry! The
decor of the place is simple with terracotta murals of embossed
fish figures. The place offers a variety of beverages. To
start off, there are a range of appetizers to choose from like iced-tea,
chocolate hot and cold, peanut butter punch or Sue's special Cocorico.
Regular
buffets are arranged on all the weekdays from Tuesday to Sunday.
Friday and Saturday evenings are for special buffets with mouth-watering
fish-curries. Sunday is exclusively for crab lovers when they
can feast on crab-curry. Other specialties of the day are special
Jamaican Jerk Chicken, Special Chicken Steak, West Indian Stew Chicken,
Ginger Garlic Pork and many more mouth-watering dishes. The best
offers of the place are Spanish Rice, Chicken Stew, Barbeque Chicken,
Pork chops and steak. What actually makes the Caribbean food different
from Indian food is the 'spices' as Caribbean food is less spicy,
slightly sweetish and stomach-friendly. Kuldeep, the PRO says, "We
use more of green chillies and less of red chillies".
Sue's
can accommodate 90 people at a time. Outside catering orders
are also taken. Celebrities like Girish Karnad, Lara Dutta (before
she was crowned Miss Universe), Sukhwinder Singh (UB group) and Meenakshi
Sheshadri with her family are some regular customers of the place.
Susan
has 15 staff members to assist her. The cost of an average meal
for two is Rs 300 along with the desserts. A buffet for two
costs Rs 280. The beverages range from Rs 15-35. The place
serves very good Caribbean salads, which are exotic. Sue's has taken
part in many food-festivals and has won 'Taste of the World' title
in the HSBC food-festival held in January 2000. The restaurant
is open from 12:00-3:45 pm in the afternoon and 7:00-10:45 pm in
the evenings. So, all you seafood lovers rush to Sue's and have
a gala time feasting there!
