What does the word Lakshadweep brings to our mind? Swaying
palms, cool coconuts, sizzling sun, shimmering sand, coral filled
sea, crystal blue waters, colourful coral and, of course, delicious
fish. But this tropical fantasy is too far away from our landlocked
Bangalore.
There
is no need to worry, the fish atleast is readily available to us.
This time in a mouth-watering variation! Tuna or Choora, as
the local Malayali fishermen call it, is now processed to be
sold all round the year in a ready-to-use package.
This fish was only available in the market during the season and at
an exorbitant rate. Now the Lakshadweep Development Corporation
has taken up this task of processing and selling canned fish in all
parts of the country.
Tuna is called the prince of the fish, with its enormous body
weighing 4 to 10 kgs. This fish variety, found all over the world,
is in abundance in the Arabian Sea. But this prized fish is
not available throughout the year. Even when it is available, it is
often beyond the common man's budget.
The government realised that the fishermen of Lakshadweep Islands
were losing out because they couldn't send the fish to Cochin
harbour before the qu ality
degraded. So a processing unit has been established by the Lakshadweep
Development Corporation Ltd which now supplies canned fish to all
major cities.
The Tuna fish is canned and sold in two versions. One is the
normal tin of light meat tuna which has to be cooked with ingredients.
The other one is the heat-and-serve package in which ready masala
is added. Just add a little water and heat it on the stove. And it's
ready to eat.
At present in Bangalore, there is only one outlet in HAL III stage,
but soon it will be made available at all major stores.
