Life
in a vibrant city can be interesting, but it also means limited
spaces. And that usually translates into homes minus gardens.
Indoor plants can bring the touch of nature into your homes
and offices. Flowering plants and greenery around you makes
you feel good, especially at your work place. Nurseries in and
around Bangalore are supplying a variety of plants - including
ornamental and fruit yielding plants to city dwellers. Generally
people who move into new houses like to add greenery to their
rather stark surroundings. Some nurseries in the city even take
landscaping assignments for homes and offices.
The city's demand for indoor plants has been rising year
by year and presently about 250 nurseries have come up on the
outskirts of the city too. There are centuries old nurseries
that have been maintained by families over generations like
M Devappa
and Son Nursery. About 20 nurseries are being managed by
these families around Lalbagh in the city. Some of these
nurseries are adding rare species to their collection of plants.
Customers throng these nurseries since many in Bangalore, including
offices and commercial establishments, make use of indoor plants
in their decor and maintain beautiful landscaped gardens with
fountains. Maintaining gardens and lawns is a hobby and a tradition
for many in the city. Beautiful traffic islands like the one
in front of Mayo Hall with grass beds, plants and fountains
are being maintained by corporate houses. They add to the city's
charm.
In
recent years, nurseries have come up in suburbs such as Nelamangala,
Yelahanka, Attibele and Sarjapur Road which supply
horticulture saplings and ornamental plants to farmers and
satellite town dwellers. Farmers buy fruit-based plants like
Mango, Sapota, Coconut, Papaya. According to some managers
of nurseries, they usually sell more plants and seeds during
the monsoon months.
Devappa Nursery, established in 1856, is just
in front of the Lalbagh main gate. "It is one of the oldest
nurseries in India," says the Manager, Shankar. The
fifth generation owner of the nursery is Mr Sitaram.
This spacious farm, under the cool shade of tall trees, sells
a variety of plants, seedlings and seeds in sachets and pots.
Flowering plants like rose plants, grafted varieties, grass
type plants, flowering creepers, climbers, species of spice
plants like clove, cinnamon, cardamom, pepper, grafted cactus,
bougainvillea and many others are found here apart
from fruit-based tree plants. These plants are priced between
Rs 10 and Rs 1,000. They accept parcel orders for more than
15 plants from outside Bangalore.

Lakshmi Nursery
According to M. Pillappa, the owner of Lakshmi Nursery
on the Kanakapura Road, there is greater demand for ornamental
plants from people who move into newly built houses. These plants
are used to embellish their home fronts and lawns. The nursery,
being maintained since two years, has a variety of indoor ornamental
plants, vegetable and fruit-based seedlings and seeds for consumers.
Ornamental avenue trees like Silver Oak are available
here. The plants are priced between Rs 3 and Rs 250 here.
