Oballappa & Bros - one of the oldest nurseries

IPlants kept for sale in a nursery t's an ardent desire for people to have lush gardens around their house along with indoor plants, which can bring in the essence of nature to give a touch of class to the interiors; be it home or office. Flowery plants, which are very attractive and beautiful, can embellish the interiors and make one feel proud.

Bangalore has lots of Nurseries in and around the city supplying varieties of plants to people who appreciate them. One such nursery is M. Obalappa & Brothers, familiarly known as Obalappa Nursery situated on Lalbagh Road and who are in this business for more than a century.

"It's the quality and the service we have been providing that has brought us so far," says Vasuki D. Soumendra, proprietor of the nursery. The nursery was started by Kadirajppa and Obalappa in the year 1885 and from them it moved on to two generations.

Their farm located on the Hosur Road has a wide range of plants, which include ornamCustomers selecting thier choice of plants at a nurseryental, indoor plants, avenue trees and fruit plants. At present they have ten workers and their families staying at the farm taking care of the nursery where they grow these rare plants. The nursery boasts of the best collections of palm. The business is at its peak before the monsoon, as farmers buy saplings for their fields. It's also good when there are functions happening in the city, as they rent these decorative flowers for a day or two and the garden lovers are the customers who visit throughout the year. They also rent and lease the plants on contract basis wherein they provide servicing and transportation.

These saplings and the plants have to be looked after with lots of care and to prevent diseases they use neem widely, which is very effective rather than the pesticides, which are occasionally used. But the best treatment according to Vasuki is the strong breeze which wipes away the insects resting on the plants.

"Big companies usually lack time to take care of these plants and they get into a contract with us for the supply and maintenance of the plants. We usually visit twice a week as regular maintenance is required", says Vasuki.

They are involved in exporting saplings and seeds to Middle Eastern countries and have shipped them for the past 25 years. They are also involved in Floriculture and were exporting them but shut it down four years back due to heavy losses.

When it comes to competition they face a threat from the street sellers who sell plants, which are not of high breed and are least conscious about its quality.

According Mr. Vasuki, the present generation is not much interested in gardening or decorating the interiors with these lovely plants.
