Ayurveda,
the Indian medicinal system is making a comeback. The formulas
for the preparation of Ayurvedic medicines might be well known
to many Ayurvedic practitioners in Bangalore. But knowing just
where to get the herbs and natural ingredients, the main inputs
in Ayurvedic medicines, is another story. These rare herbs and
ingredients are available only at a few outlets on Avenue Road
in K.R Market. While the Ibrahim Baig shop on Avenue Road in
the K.R Market area sells only herbs and natural ingredients
for Ayurvedic medicines, the outlets on Grain Bazaar
in the same area sells not only herbs, but also dry fruits and
puja items.
T H Basavarajappa Grandhige Traders is one such shop
in K R Market selling Ayurvedic medicines and puja items since
50 years, in addition to herbs and other natural medicinal
ingredients, says B Nataraj the present proprietor
of the shop. The shop sells all the items required for pujas
like Satyanarayana Vratam, Grihapravesham, temple opening
ceremony, Ayyappa puja, and other types of traditional pujas.
From where do these traders source these medicinal herbs and
puja items? "We buy them both locally and from places outside
the
state like Uttara Pradesh, Delhi and Agra, says A Channaveerappa, another trader who has been selling
herbs, country medicines and puja items since 35 years. Dry
fruits like cashew nuts, almonds, walnuts, pistachio are available
here.
Ayurvedic treatment had been one of native systems of medicine
in India. Indian epics have it that Dhanvanthari was the inventor
of this system of medicine. Nowadays, though the Allopathic
system of medicine is popular in the country, Ayurveda has
many takers too and its study and practice is being encouraged
by individuals and governments. Karnataka State has its Ayurvedic
college-cum-hospital named after Krishnarajendra Wodeyar of
Mysore in Bangalore near Anandarao Circle.
